Congratulations to our No Limits Entrepreneur of the Week, Courtney Kates! Name: Courtney Kates, Founder/Designer Maison Du Soir BrandHome: Orange County, CABio: I’m a California native, raised by a strong single mother. I was a ballerina until the age of 21, dancing with Joffrey Ballet in NYC at the end of my career. When I moved back to California from NYC, I graduated from UCLA and shortly thereafter started working for a corporation in action sports. I stayed in that industry for 10 years working in merchandising and design and climbed the corporate ladder. In my last 2 years, I was helping one of the largest companies in action sports launch new brands. I moonlighted Maison Du Soir for 1 year and then finally took the leap and committed full time to growing my brand. I’ve been in business now for 5 years. Why did you start your own business? It was after I purchased my first set of quality sleepwear, that my obsession began. When I slipped on that first set, I looked better which made me feel better and consequently helped me sleep better. After a mad search for more sleepwear sets, I realized there was not much out there that I really liked. I'm not a lace and bows girl and most of the classic sets that are somewhat affordable have wide legs and boxy tops. Being in the fashion industry, I didn't understand why it seemed the sleepwear market wasn't paying attention to our changing needs and trends. Everything seemed dated, cheesy, boxy or covered in kitty cats and ice cream cone prints. My mind became flooded with ideas of cuter, more flattering lines and silhouettes…pondering the question ”what does the cool chick sleep in?” I developed a business plan, set aside some money, went through the proper legal channels, made a calendar and did my research. I worked and worked and worked….every weekend and every night. What did you have in place when you made the leap and quit your job? By the time I quit my job and made the leap, I had already been building the business for 1 ½ years so the foundation was pretty secure. The most difficult part was the financial side, going from a corporate VP salary to close to nothing. How are you financing your business (venture, credit, savings, friends & family, etc)? I have a Factor, utilize business credit cards and run a very tight budget. It’s a game of chess but I’m still alive, self funded and have no debt.Name one business obstacle and how you’ve overcome it: Funding is always challenging. I’ve been in constant growth mode, putting everything back into the business. Doubling revenue year over year sounds amazing but at the ground level, it’s actually very challenging keeping yourself afloat properly. I manage it all by having a tight budget, strategically utilizing my various financing sources and being very diligent about balancing the check book. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself at the start of your new venture? Take a Quickbooks class and start using it on Day 1!
