From the 1970’s, Robert Towne was known in Hollywood as a gifted screenwriter, who obtained his first Oscar nomination in 1974 to the movie The Last Detail (1973) and also a BAFTA Film Award. The next year, he won not just a Best Screenplay Oscar for Chinatown(1974) but also a Golden Globe and BAFTA Film Award. He obtained two Oscar nominations, for Shampoo (1975) and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes(1984). Towne made his feature directing debut with private Greatest (1982), which he wrote followed closely by Tequila Sunrise (1988), starring Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer.
