Darnell started his hockey career with the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) at 2010. The next year, he was chosen third overall at the 2011 OHL Priority Selection by the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He played three seasons with Sault Ste. He had been rated as a top prospect that fulfilled the expectation for a Top-10 choice at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He had been chosen by the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL) from the initial round, seventh total of this draft. On July 25, 2013, that he had been signed with the Oilers to some three-year entry-level contract. Following an accident on December 1, 2016, Nurse failed ankle surgery. Throughout the 2011–12 year, Darnell won a bronze medal with Team Ontario in the 2012 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. That identical year, he had been appointed to the Tournament All-Star Team. That exact same season, he performed with Team Canada in the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships and won the bronze medal. Throughout the 2012–13 year he played for Team Canada and won a gold medal in the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He won gold with Canada in the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship and has been named among Canada’s top few players.
