I had an extremely harrowing exciting and terrifying experience yesterday, and am dumb enough that I captured some of it on video. While on the Amalfi Coast of Italy for Devon and Ryan’s wedding, they booked a boat for the day to take us from Positano to Capri. It’s an incredibly beautiful journey that looks like something out of a Greek myth with crazy ruined castles and massive cliffs coming down into deep blue water. The boat was beautiful and the people at the wedding are great, and we were all drinking and having a very goofy time. When we reach Capri, I noticed some Cliffside caves that I wanted to explore, so I took a kayak from the boat into the caves. It turned out the cave I was exploring was actually more of a long tunnel, that led to a secret Cove. I stopped and relaxed in the cove, feeling tremendously lucky, dangling my feet in the water. Suddenly, an Italian couple in their late 30s swam frantically up out of the water, warning me to pull out my feet. They explained in broken English that they had gotten into swim but then realized that the water was infested with jellyfish. Indeed, looking into the water instead of around at the scenery, I realize that my kayak was surrounded by jellyfish and I had only not been stung on the feet out of pure dumb luck. The couple explained that they could not get back to their boat because they cannot risk getting back into the water, and I realize that the tide coming in would prevent them from swimming back out and bring in way more jellyfish; more were already starting to appear like a storm cloud underwater. They have no way of contacting anyone, and none of the larger boats could get into this hidden Cove, so I realized it was up to me to get them out of there. It was extremely frightening, but one at a time I ferried Italian couple back through that tumultuous jellyfish filled waters of the dark and spooky cave tunnel on my little kayak out onto the open ocean and to their boat. If you feel like I’m using a lot of adjectives there, it’s because I was feeling a lot of adjectives at the time.
